AI Pioneer Geoffrey Hinton Worried About Job Loss Threat in 5-20 Years

Geoffrey Hinton, described as the father of artificial intelligence, stated that he is very concerned about the possibility of technology taking over people’s jobs. He suggested that a solution could be a universal basic income.

The incredible advancements in artificial intelligence technologies bring one question to everyone’s mind: “Can it take away people’s jobs?” While it’s still too early to answer this question definitively, many experts regularly raise concerns.

Geoffrey Hinton, known as the “father of artificial intelligence” for his pioneering work in artificial neural networks, is one of them. In a recent interview with the BBC, Hinton expressed his significant concern about artificial intelligence potentially taking many mundane jobs away from humans.

Hinton, who has expressed his concern, cites universal basic income, which has been on the agenda for years, as a solution. Universal basic income is a regular payment to all adults in a given population, regardless of their employment status, with no restrictions on how the money is spent. This method has long been proposed by experts as a way to mitigate the economic impact of artificial intelligence.

The father of artificial intelligence stated that he proposed universal basic income to the UK government due to the risks posed by artificial intelligence. He also mentioned that it could be used worldwide. Universal basic income has also been of great interest as a way to combat poverty.

According to Hinton, artificial intelligence will increase productivity and create more wealth. However, unless governments intervene, this will only make the rich richer and hurt people on lower incomes by causing them to lose their jobs. Hinton warns that this could be very bad for society, adding that the technology could pose a huge threat within 5 to 20 years.
